‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all thru the Marietta Square, everyone was eating at…the House of Lu, our local Chinese restaurant.
We wanted to as well and thought we were going early enough, but alas our 5:45PM arrival time was too late to beat the crowd. Walking around the corner, we saw that On North was open. Marietta’s newest restaurant, we had been wanting to try it since their recent debut, and we (Peking) duck(ed) in and asked for a table.
On North was supposed to be called “Local On North” to match their other locations in Roswell and Canton, but the folks across the square at The Local protested (they got lawyers and judges involved) and “On North” was created.
Anyway, there was “no room at the inn” without a reservation. We spotted a couple of seats at the bar and they said we could sit there.
We like sitting at the bar as that’s usually where all the action is. Tonight, the bartender was not exhibiting any Christmas cheer. He was downright grumpy. I asked him to recommend a festive Christmas drink and he just shook his head at me. Guess I was on my own.
From the drink menu, I try the Georgia Peach, which is peach bourbon and peach brandy with a bourbon-soaked cherry. It is a bit sweet for me. The cherry is the highlight. Make them put one in your next drink. Eve sticks with beer, although she would have gone with a darker stout had the barkeep mentioned he had it. Did we point out he was of poor disposition tonight?
On North features a large, open kitchen.
The kitchen is a hub of activity, and they are busy tonight. Menu items they are preparing include tacos, burgers, pizzas, salads, and some “big plate” items like snapper, pork chops, and steaks.
There are a lot of communal tables in the long, narrow dining area.
You sit pretty close to the next table. Don’t expect to have any romantic conversations with your date.
Meanwhile, back at the bar, we order dinner.
Eve gets the shrimp tacos. They come with a bean soup. The shrimp are nicely-cooked and the slaw makes this a dish that works well.
The fries on a nearby plate look good to me, so I order an ahi burger to go with them.
There’s nothing like a fresh-cut handful of fries on your plate. These are crispy with a hint of salt. The burger is quite good. It’s served rare in the middle and topped with crispy onions, ginger and a wasabi mayo that gives it a bit of a kick.
The Bottom Line on On North: Welcome to Marietta. Now that you have decided on your name, do something about that bartender. Good food is always negated when the service is not friendly.
Rom-Com of the Week
This week’s film is an Amazon offering, “Brittany Runs A Marathon”.
Jillian Bell is excellent as Brittany, an out of shape girl who gets into running. Some may not call this a rom-com as there is not a traditional relationship, but it is about falling in love with running. Anyone who has ever trained for a personal best will really enjoy this movie. And it’s based on a true story, so pop a tub of popcorn and get ready for some inspiration.
