When we last left our favorite food bloggers, we had just finished lunch with friends at Red Hare on the Marietta Square. Now, let’s go get some dessert. One block away, in the Marietta Square Market is a “new” bakery and deli where I used to eat as a teenager. I spent a lot of time and consumed many calories in Henri’s on Irby Avenue in Buckhead. It was a short walk away from our house. Now, many years later, I can do the same in Marietta as Henri’s is right down the street.

They have their own private entrance on the north end of the market.

The better to sneak in and marvel at the sights.

There are not one, not two, but three display cases full of baked goods.

Do you really think it’s easy to choose?

It’s pretty much impossible to make up your mind, but the good thing is you can’t go wrong.

They also serve sandwiches in the deli part of the store. We’ll get to those in a moment, but why not have dessert first?

If you are feeding a lot of people, you can buy cakes, or just a cupcake if you are feeding yourself.

The gingerbread man is so cute that he deserves his own closeup.

The chocolate cupcake is very rich. And very decadent.

I only ate half and took home the rest. The cupcake is better at room temperature as the icing, which has to be full of “bad” things, softens up after being left out of the refrigerator.

We went back a few weeks later for lunch and took our son. There’s plenty of outdoor seating at the market and the seating area is heated. As long as it’s not raining, you can sit outside without having to sit near other people. There is a pandemic around, you know.

Most of the menu is sandwiches. You can get a bag of chips to go with, and you can even get a cookie if you finish your sandwich. Or even if you don’t.

The sandwiches are pretty simple, like a French Dip.

A little roast beef, a little cheese, a little bread and a little au jus gravy. It’s a winner.

The chicken salad is very good as well. My date orders hers on rye and this is what it looks like…

“This isn’t rye bread!”, she says. She’s from New York, where she used to be a hand model, but she’s right. It’s more like a pumpernickel.

The Po-Boy is Henri’s most famous sandwich. It’s the one that got me through high school. Although no file photos exist of this sandwich from 1973, here’s what it looks like in 2021.

You can get turkey or roast beef on their special French bread. Top it with salami, ham, Swiss cheese, and pickle and you have an instant classic. It’s a good value at only $6.99. They should charge more. People who review Henri’s online say they have been eating there for 30 or 40 years. I had my first Henri’s Po-Boy almost 50 years ago. I suppose that makes me a classic too.
